I have an '04 F350 6.0 that I bought a 2 years ago from a used car dealership. The truck had "Banks" decals all over it with a spot on the dash for mounting a pda. I am assuming the guy who traded this in had a tuner installed which he removed upon trade in. Would it be a good idea for me to go to my local Ford dealer and pay the hundred or so bucks to have my truck updated with the latest reflash or will the service manager look at me like I have four heads?
I do most of the maintenance myself and use my local mechanic for the big stuff. The truck has not seen a Ford mechanic since I have owned it.
I notice a little hesitation If I get on it to pull out into an intersection and was wondering if this might have something to do with the former programmer.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Not knowing what level you're at currently, I've had great success with the most recent flash on my '04. The fact that it will ensure the FICM has the current injector inductive warm-up logic, and the better EGR performance, should contribute to reduced problems.
If it were me, I would just to be sure everything is up to par.
you're gonna wanna make sure that the banks stuff is completely uninstalled. after that, take it in and get it reflashed....def worth the money if you can afford it. the hesitation sounds normal...aka turbo lag.
shouldn't matter if the banks stuff is still there, the new ford flash will get rid of it will it not? service manager might tell you that they can't do that, thats what they told me anyways so i kept bugging them and they finally told me to just go talk to the tech to see if he could do it and he did it for me, took him 15 minutes and he inspected my egr cooler at the same time to make sure it was leaking visually
When I had my '04 (early) reflashed to the "buzz" flash, it was pretty much nuetered. No more snap, less turbo whistle, and less responsive. My buddy has the sister truck to mine and he won't let the dealer near that OBD port.
This is the sticking point for me. I've read that the inductive heat flash has in some cases " neutered" an otherwise good running truck. I have some issues with my truck running rough when its cold and I should get the latest flash but I don't want less performance, and besides warmer temps are right around the corner . If it does still run rough when it warms up outside I'm first going to switch to 5-40 syn next OC ( switching to syn regardless) then if the problem persists I'll have to try the newest flash I guess, and see what happens from there. I have @ 1500 mi to get my moneys worth from the HSS and see if I get any more improvement until then.
The trucks that get "neutered" are likely just being flashed improperly, I've had no negative effects from getting the latest flash done on my truck. As for the extra hassle, techs don't care about it and neither does Ford if you are paying out of your own pocket to get something done.
I think I'm going to bite the bullet and do the re-flash. Are all dealers going to be the same? I have a small dealer with service over the bridge in Salisbury but i'm wondering if I should make the trip to Portsmouth Ford in NH because they are a bigger dealer.
Thanks to all for all the replies! This site is Pissa!

The size of the dealer may not really matter. It's the talent of the diesel technician that matters. Maybe you can get some feedback from local folks on their service experiences at the dealers in question. And always remember; you can only get to a talented technician if you have a insightful service writer in front of him (or her). A fallacious service writer can kill you before you ever get to talk with a tech... Ask about the service writers too.
