Replacement fuel tanks

I have done no research on why the catalogs say that the oversized fuel tanks or the Bronco tank from LMC do not work with the diesels. I want ro replace both tanks on my truck as they both leak. While doing this I would like to take the opporitunity to increase the capacity of one or both tanks. I would like to hear a educated response as to why the Gasoline tanks will not swap for a diesel tank because from what I can remember the physical dimensions are the same.

don't know for sure but my guess is that the fuel sending units won't fit in the openings in the top of the tanks they're selling for gassers. may not be true or correct, but after having both tanks off of my '90 and swapping out sending unit on front tank, the sending units don't look like anything i've seen on a gasser. mind you, i haven't looked at the gas tank of a gasser vehicle since i got rid of my '70 Bronco, so all my words here may be bogus, but it's all i got. bought a replacement rear tank for my diesel and it was around $200 for just the tank. got it through my radiator shop guy. oh, yeah, just remembered something. on my truck the only thing holding up the rear tank is the skid plates, so that may be another reason the oversized tanks won't fit because the skid plates that hold things up won't go back on. just a thought

I just swapped the front 19 gal. tank from my 1980 f100 into my 89 f250 diesel. The tank from the f100 came from a 91 but they were the same except for the sending units. When I put the front tank into the diesel all I had to do was remove the little metal breather tube that was in the center of the opening where the rubber filler hose connected to the tank. The sending units are the same size so all you would have to do is swap the sending unit from the old tank into the new tank. I havent aby problems and no longer have a leaking tank. On the upside I bought the tank from the junkyard for 40 bucks and it came with over half a tank of gas in it.

The local radiator shop had a 44 gallon rear tank that I used in mine.
Longer bolts to secure the skid plate was all I had to change.
Well I also had to leave the spare tire out, since the new tank now sits as low as the original did with the spare under it.

Everything is great, until you have to fill up.
250 to fill a pickup with fuel is a little much.

that's the only reason i haven't burned any work time to put the new rear tank back on mine. i'm too tight to fill up both at the same time. LOL
didn't know that longer bolts would let you bolt up larger tank. that's a good piece of information to have.

Well, I just put 1/2 tank in the rear tank this evening, 106.29 for 24 gallons.
4.359 per gallon as of today.

So now if I am clear empty in both tanks it looks like 287 dollars to fill up.

Well I think I may be turning the fuel down and adjusting the fuel curve to a more moderate setting real soon.

I am hoping this is just a temp thing because of the home heating oil consumption right now.

Probably wishful thinking.....but better than nothing.

Off road is 3.97, fuel is killing us for the equipment.
We aren't even running everything right now and the fuel bill is about 200 a day.
2 excavators
1 backhoe
1 skid steer
1 dozer
Plus 2 dump trucks sucking down another 200 a day worth of on road fuel.

When this fuel price increase hits the stuff in the stores, we are all going to have to go on welfare.
We aren't going to be able to drive to work and buy food at the same time.

After that Bear and Strearns thing, I am a little concerned about our economy.
Things are not looking good at all.
With all the transportation costs and fuel costs, I am afraid the construction industry is going to take a big hit this summer.

yeah, i know what you mean. i run a computer business and one of my main sources of income just went to teh public sector and cut about 12K of my income. my second job is residential construction and the crew i work for in that has slowed down to where i'm not getting much work for them. there's a guy that i do dirt work with (i run a trackhoe) that hasn't had a lot to do because of the weather. i'm wondering if i'm going to have to find an 8-5 job somewhere. have a degree in economics and in studying the market, it looks like the fed is going to have to do something about regulating the speculators in the oil futures market. that's what is REALLY killing us now. they've found a way to make a fortune in the market and it only drives the price of the raw commodity price out of the ceiling. i'm not the smartest person in the world, but i've figured out that if there's a way for investors to screw a market up, taht's the way to do it is let the speculators drive the pricing. just my thoughts.

Well last I heard yesterday the Fed was to meet today, and the Prime was expected to drop a full percent.

I have not seen the news yet.

Oil futures/prices are causing inflation rates at record levels right now.

Yeah, I cant believe I paid over $100 to fill both tanks....its rediculous! But the only thing we can do is pay it and drive less....while the Chinese and Indians drive more.....seems odd.....

Yeah and the Chinese will be doing it with our oil off the coast of florida the tree huggers, or I guess kelp huggers, wont let us touch. If its gonna be driled any way we may as well drill it too. Its about time to break out the ten speed.

I really feel for you guys in the states. I've been following once incident after another that shakes the US economy, first enron, then sub prime morgages, now a major bank on the brink of collapse, where does it end.

In canada we have been insulated (at least for now) by the high price of oil because it has driven our dollar up. The latest inflation numbers are 1.8% for canada. We still pay too much for fuel, but it has been fairly stable lately, again mainly because of the high dollar. Looking on the news, the federal reserve ended up cutting the interst rate by 0.75% instead of 1%, I hope its enough.

Replacement Tanks

Dave Sponaugle, I'd like to hear the details of your rear tank swap. Like what sending unit you used? Where was the tank sourced?
