I recently had the engine rebuilt in my '66 F100, I noticed that I need to add fluid to the radiator from time to time. I was wondering if I should be able to see the water flow in the radiator when looking into the radiator. I replaced the cap because it looked pretty old and I don't see any leaks. Does anyone have any ideas where I may be losing water ?? I also noticed that the upper hose blows up like a ballon when the engine is hot, the gauge shows that the engine is not over heating and the thermostat was replaced with a 190. The engine was bored 30 over, I was told that the "new" engine will use a little oil and water until it's "broke in". Anyone have any feedback on this "problem".
That sounds bad to me. the gaskets should be firmly seated as the bolts were torqued down. You may want to double check that the bolts are properly torqued.
I've never seen flow in the radiator, but it's a pretty nice place to watch for air bubbles. If your heads are leaking exhaust into the coolant, the bubbles will float to the highest point. If exhaust is flowing into the coolant system then it's possible while under pressure(hot) that coolant would flow back in to the cylinders. If it's going into the oil, you should see the oil turning white. Out the tail pipes, oil is blue and coolant is white smoke.
