So, today Im on the highway and I notice my speedometer droping to 0 and then back to 65 or so (speed traviling)three or four times. Its raining outside now,(dont have a garage) but I dont think its going to tomorrow. And Im wondering where to start looking. THANX for any info! Oyeah its a 87 Bronco XLT 5.0
Bad speedometer sensor or you need a new exciter ring in your rear diff. They work together. Get a haynes or chiltons manual and find where the sensor is located. It should give you the info on where to find the sensor and how to test the sensor. Sensor without cruise control are about $20 at autozone or $65 w/cruise. If you not mechanically inclined the exiter ring should be done by a pro, if that is the issue. Could be something else, but that is where I would start.
Take the sensor out and clean it first. See if that helps.
THANX Pipe! I found the sensor, (wasnt sure what it was) on the transfer case and in Haynes. They didnt say anything about trouble shooting, just about changing O-ring. Anyway after seeing the picture in Haynes I recalled seeing it when I was doing trans swap last summer,(but didnt really know what it was), and looked to find the bracket that held the sensor had just come lose. EASY FIX! So THANX for helping locate! And watch those BURNS!!! LOL!
Just for your information. I had a speedo problem on my 95 Bronco. The speedo would jump up and down at speed.
That affected my tramsmission shifting.
So I had the computor scanned and nothing. Took it to a transmission shop and the guy said I need a new trans! Hey right!
My Chiltons manual says to check the speedo cable. There is no speedo cable. Its electronic with a sensor on the rear axel. So I replaced the sensor. Nothing!
Next I took it to a auto electric shop. Nothing!
My last resort I took it to a speedo-o-meter shop. The guy there was able to duplicate my problem with out even driving down the road. Problem solved!
Bad gauge cluster $300.00 for a new one. So I hit the junk yard and got it for $75.00!
