A D44HD will be standard in a F250 but its only HD because of the brake system. Nothing is stronger (axles carrier gear etc) NO D44 will have kingpins. Only D60s will have them.

I believe all F250 highboy Dana 44's were heavy duty.

"1969 – 1975 Large Kingpin. The true Heavy Duty Dana 44."

i found this on that very site, it also has pics of d44s with no ball joints, im not sure if these are king pins or something else.

ive also seen dodge trucks with d44s with some kind of king pin.

Thanks for the link highboy250! (Part 2 & 1 are also a good read)

STGFordCrazy04, sorry but your dead wrong.

crescentwrencher,

The 75 F250 had two different closed knuckle Dana 44's, both with kingpins. Which one do you have? (Can you take some picture for me?)

1969 – 1975 Small Kingpin F250
Think Baseball sized closed knuckle

1969 – 1975 Large Kingpin. "highboy" The true Heavy Duty Dana 44
Think Softball sized closed knuckle

Just for Fun...
1976-77.5 Open knuckle F250 axle

The 1969 – 1975 Large Kingpin is the only True Heavy Duty Dana 44.
NOT because of the Hubs, but yes the 76-77 hubs on all F250's are the same as the Heavy Duty Dana 44's.
It's because of the larger u-joint. The 69-75 HD Dana 44 axle run a 5-86x u-joint

Top shaft is a 5-86x u-joint style axle shaft, bottom is a 5-297x style shaft. This heavy duty 5-86x u-joint axle shaft does not fit in a Ball Joint Dana 44.

No, the 69-75 have drum brakes from the factory. The 76+ are disc, much better.
However the HD Dana 44 has a strong axle shaft and U-joint for 69-75. But they are rare, so not worth switching to.

Knuckle = 44
Kingpin - Not shown in diagram. See pics below.
Ball joint = 36
U-joint = Middle of 48

Key to above --> http://77cj.littlekeylime.com/Spicer...erscommon_.gif

Dana 44
Balljoint (One big Nut, usually 1 5/16")

Dana 44
Kingpin (Four nuts)

Its been like that for as long as I can remember.

Mr N,
what was the application for kingpin D44s? Ive never come across them in any of the trucks Ive had/seen.
