Yeah but put a 7,000 pound trailer behind them you'll be lucky to get 5mpg out of the 5.4/6.8.

And my 7.3 gets 19.9 highway and 15 city unloaded and 17 highway loaded.

and if you take the dpf off the 6.4 they actualy get realy decent millage I think I heard 20mpg

I'll take that bet. I'm sure I could get more than 5MPG with 7000lbs behind my F150.

Ok mybe I exagerated a bit but my point is the diesel will get better MPG loaded even if it only gets 12 unloaded.

But are your breaks going to hold up? What about your tranny?

The diesel comes with the beefier drive line from the Super Duty. A 5.4 in a SD would do better than your 150 because of everything around the engine. It's a package deal; the diesel comes with bigger stuff.

DANK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'm bidding on a job to mow cemeteries for the next 2 years so I'll need that nice 2002 f250 I've been looking at to yank around a landscaper's trailer with a 45 inch JD zero turn on it.

I know, I was just making a point because I'm tired of hearing BS MPG stories from diesel drivers.

But in any case, the brakes shouldn't be an issue because that close to my towing rating for my 2000 F150 5.4 auto with 3.55 rear I would definitely have trailer brakes.

As for the tranny, I'd hope it would as it has a factory cooler with the tow package. I'd add an extra cooler with a gauge though just to be safe.

The diesel come with a diesel and a $6000+ price tag. That's it. Almost everything is the same between a diesel SD and a gas SD.

Anyway, I'm just playing devil's advocate here as I like diesels but I think people get way to wrapped up in the diesel owns everything mindset.

I yank around a landscape trailer no problems with a 42 inch Exmark on it. No need for a diesel there, especially with diesel @ 3.89 and gas @ 3.12 and has been falling for about 3 weeks here.

Mike

Edit: Honestly if diesels sounded like Hondas with fart pipes but were otherwise the same, do you think they would be so popular.

I would be less inclined to buy a diesel if that was what they sounded like, but I've grown up around diesels. The smell of a diesel exhaust makes me think back to dad picking me up from school and taking me home and letting me help change the oil.

Yeah I said the SD's were all beefed up. A 150 compared to a diesel... the diesel will always be a bigger package deal, just because of the platform that it comes on. Even if the 150 ever gets a diesel, it still won't have everything the larger truck comes with.

What I don't understand is if you plan on towing heavy and often, why not just buy the bigger frame? Redford has a 5.4 in his SD and loves it (swears it can tow anything), and most guys with the V10 says its just as great as a diesel for heavy towing. So just step up to the real towing truck, and pick an engine that you want.

meee three!!!!!!!!!! i love diesels. its just to bad they offer one in a ranger anymore.
i really dont have a need for a bigger truck seeing as i only tow a 14ft boat and some dirtbikes. but i do work on them. bigger ones than you will ever see. Rolls royce Bergin engines, EMDs, peilsticks, cummings, CATS, detroit diesel- MTU, powerstrokes, and some yanmar diesels. of course some of these engines are bigger than your trucks!!!!

thats the one i worked on the summer.

nothing turns me on more than the smell of diesel. but the old lady wont ware it.

Mack diesels are good too. The only CAT diesel I've wrenched on was in a skidsteer so it wasn't all that fun.

Ok so enlighten me what kinda millage does your truck get towing? Not trying to be a dick just curious. And I do know for a fact that the v10 250s will tow as good as a diesel but only get 8MPG loaded and 15 unloaded At least the one I drove.

I would still buy a diesel if it sounded like a honda with a fart pipe because I actualy use it for what it was intended for. The cool sound is just a bonus. And I payed about the same for my truck as I saw may comparable condition gasser versions granted it only realy aplise to the older ones. And yes it is kinda anoying seeing all the punks with there lifted diesels that will never see a trailer or go off road. wow whats up with all the smilies to my right they must have changed this site quite a bit last night.

Bout 11-13 city and 15 hwy.

I just don't get the pissing matches about gas vs diesel MPG. Neither will get that good. I am also highly suspect of anyone that says thier diesel averages 20MPG highway. Anything higher is either a fluke or a lie. Also any MPG difference is almost moot now that diesel is so high and they cost much more to purchase and own. (Most of the time)

I'm no diesel newbie either just because I don't own one. I drive them for a living for about the last 3-4 years. The novelty has worn off. Seriously I love getting back into my gasser and when I hit the gas, it goes and doesn't make a racket in the process.

If I was going to tow heavy and ofter, I would buy the SD. As a matter of fact my next truck is a SD, probably a diesel but maybe a V10. We'll see how fuel goes in the next couple of years. I really want a 6.4 as it's quiet and actually goes when you stomp the throttle.

Yeah i was surprised when i first got my truck too I figured I'd be lucky to get 15mpg highway when i did the math I did some digging and suposibly when The IDIs where brand new they would get 25mpg highway but because of the two piece dampner that spun overtime its impossible to retime them close enough to factory spec. Now wether thats true or not I don't know but mine will get abou 19-18 highway depending on how I drive. weather any powerstroke can do it or noy I cant say for sure bu I've heard of it. If you do get the 6.4 I would suggest taking th dpf off and having it recalibrated to run with out it. It helps the MPG tremendusly. From what I've heard they get horible milage stock.

I also expect in the future for gass to go back up over diesel but when i don't know. The main reason I expect this is because there is no reason for Diesel to cost more than Gass. Pluss the high price of diesel hurts everyone as truckers pass the cost on to store who pass it on to us.

If I get a diesel it's really going to be for one thing-performance. If I get a 6.4, the DPF will be off and it will be tuned in the first couple of weeks. I drive one at work now and know how bad the MPG is, even if it is an ambulance.

The only reason I want a crew cab, long bed SD is because of the bigger physical size of the truck. I like going ATVing with friends and it's nice to drive one truck. So if I can get a 16-22x8 trailer, I will have plenty of room for 5 people, 5 ATVs, all thier stuff, and still be in comfort.

But I'll probably get an 05+ (I really want an 08+) V10 with the manual tranny and 4.30 rear. They are just so cheap right now. I'd much rather have a paid off rig getting 13MPG than a truck I'm making payments on getting 17.

Honestly, I don't see diesel getting cheaper than gas in the near future. It hasn't been for at least 1-2 years here. People are still buying up diesels like crazy and that has to have driven demand up substantially in the last 10 or so years that diesel trucks have been popular. Also you have to remember that they don't have to have a reason. They tightly control the supply to the demand so that we are always in a "shortage".
