My water pump is leaking out the weep hole and needs replacing. I'm looking for input on any who have changed this and any helpful hints. Looks like I should be able to do it without pulling the radiator...just the shroud. I probably should also replace the thermostat. I also am looking for a good place to buy one. I'm assuming the local dealer will be pricey. Thanks.
You can do it either way. I chose to pull the radiator. Only takes a few minutes and gives you a lot more room to work. I went to the local dealer so I don't know about price. It has been a few years so I don't remember a lot.
I split the shroud top to bottom on all my trucks. when i put them back I wire tie the top and bottom together. You will have the hoses off, so it is not much to pull the radiator. Flush it out good and add the right coolant.
The worst part is getting the fan off. I ended up using a ratchet strap and a pry bar. Once that is loose, gently lay it in the shroud. Remove the degas bottle, Disconnect hoses. Remove the bolts for the fan shroud. The shroud and fan blade need to come out together. Be careful with the fan, the edges are sharp. Remove the CPS sensor connector and lay it out of the way. Remove the bolts from the water pump. Keep track of them as there are different lengths. I pulled the therm. and replaced it and the housing as that is what is recommended. Several people recommend the billet therm housing, but I didn't want to wait for it. Then reassembly is the opposite. I think that is pretty much it as best as I can remember. I might have forgotten something along the way, but I am sure you will know when you get in there. I think you might be able to rent a fan removal tool from some parts stores. That would probably be a good idea because that was the worst part.
I'd recommend Dieselsite's billet housing and 203 thermostat. Also, change out your upper hose to a non-through the belt hose (ambulance package hose). Also, get some oring sliding grease for the waterpump .
I had to replace mine a couple of weeks ago I went with A---Zone $149.99 with lifetime warenty it's made of aluminum like the original. I too use the Zerex G-05 coolant.
The only trouble I had was the fan nut. I never got the tool tried to use vice grips didn't work. I had read on here about useing a air chizel to break it loose didn't want to do it but after a couple of hours trying I decided to do it. As soon as I hit the air the nut backed off just slight marks on the nut.
i took one bolt out of the pulley and put in a longer one about 1/2 way (just enouph for the bar to hold onto)..then used that bolt and the pulley to hold a against and with the belt still on..i turned the big nut off..if that didnt work..i was going to temped the strap wrench...
