Usually if there is a code stored or a fault, it shows up two ways.
1. Turn the ignition on and let it set a couple minutes to look at it'self then flash a code/s if there is a problem.
2. Triggering the dash readout HEC operation may show a powertrain code if the speedo is digital.
The two (1 and 2) will usually be related to each other for a single fault when looked up on a code chart for that test.
A standard code reader in the DLC jack won't read any of these.
There are certain instances when an engine code will be related to a dash code but unless you understand them, you can't tell.
