Just purchased a 2001 f150 supercab xlt 4x4 with about 60,000 miles and one owner. I had a carfax report pulled on this truck and everything looked good.
There where service records in the glove box, so i believe that they took care of it, as far as oil changes and other maintenance. The body is strait no dents or scratches. I did notice that my back windows did leak in water. But that was a simple fix with new rubber. I havent took off road yet, but I saw some posts about the electronic shifter motor locking up if it has not been ran in a long time. Does anyone have a truck like mine? If so have you had real problems with this? or the transfercase? Is there anything that you can do as far as maintenance to prevent things like this?
the best thing to do to prevent the motor failure is run the 4x4 a few times a month at least. even if its just down your driveway select 4 hi 4low and then back its keeps the motors from freezing up and causing problems other then that nothin i can think of off hand.
And change the transfer case oil, just as regularly as you do the rear ends. They say 100k miles, but I like to do it at least annually. Most people over look these points when servicing a car, but if it fails it gets really expensive.
My Dad had a 01 supercrew, had it tell about 100,000 miles(just this past year) never had any problems with the shift motor. only had problems with the oil pressure sending unit. But that wasn't untell he took it mud running and packed abunch of mud under the hood and over heated it due to the fan not spinning. that front crossmember that holds the front axle catches alot of mud and forces it up into the engine compartment.
