I have a 05 F250 diesel 6.0 w/35,500 miles. Nine months ago I went to start my truck and it would not start. It would crank but not start.Had it towed to dealer, of course it started right up there. They changed fuel filters that time. Seemed like that did it. Now 3-1-08 and it has done it again. This time if I turn it off for 15 seconds or so then it will completely start second time. Took it Monday 3-10-08 to dealer. This time they put in new alternator. They said that was the problem. Picked it up Wednesday. Was gone 40 minutes and it did it again, turned around and took it right back. Needless to say it is still there and no answer yet on what is wrong with it. If anyone could help me i would really be greatful.

Well,
you may repost in a more Diesel specific section here and get more responses, but a fellow I know had a glowplug preheat timer of sorts go bad on his 01. It caused sim. issues of sporatic start failures. Does yours turn over , but just not ignite(run) ? The module he replaced was on the back of the radiator support, and he found the lead to diagnose here at FTE. Good luck & best wishes
If you're alternator was replaced the first thing I would suggest is having your batteries load tested individually. Don't leave them hooked together for the test. A diesel takes a lot of juice to fire. One weak battery will spin the engine, but not provide enough power to start.
It sounds like your failed start on the first attempt was due to the excess load put on the batteries by the glow plug system. When you tried again the 2nd time the glow plugs did not come on or stay on, so less draw on the batts allowed it to start.
Most auto stores will load test your batteries for free, and free is always the best place to start.
Thanks for the link!!! I have posted there. Because I have just took my truck back again today. I just picked up Saturday. Now I have 2 new batteries and they said something about doing something w/the computer??? I am sooooo lost this being my 1st truck and a diesel at that??? They I guess today think I am nuts!! They had the shop foreman come out and see what it was doing and of course it fired right up. The guy that has had it happen to him was not there today. Just my luck. But they kept it anyway. Have u heard anything about a glowplug preheat timer??? Thanks 4 any help!!! God Bless!!
The glowplug preheat timer is what failed on my buddys rig. After repacement he hasn't had a problem. Battery load test is a sound investment. How did it all turn out ?
Thank you so much for your reply. Ford actually found out that it was a blown gasket or seal. So that was not let enough oil pressure built up to start the truck. Again thank you for your reply.

Thanks for letting us know what you found Trish. Hang around and do some reading. Both here and the 6.0 section. Next time you take you're truck in you'll be talking circles around those techs.
You are right! When I was on the 6.0 forum someone told me what to tell them to check. Of course they did not listen to me. So when I return back in an hour with it they check it and to their surprise that was the problem. So I really am thankful that I talked to all of you. I will be checking in and out with ya. Again thanks so much! We are excited that it is fixed. We leave Friday for a week of camping!!!
