Ford "great" hubs

Anybody got any idea how to get then front hubs to lock and unlock correctly? I'm not worring about the "auto" position working correct but at least so they lock when you actually put them in the "lock" position.

Yup.... Take them out of the truck... throw them in the garbage and put some real warn manual hubs in it.... The only way to go.... Ford stock hubs are junk as far as I'm concerned.... Thats coming from a guy that has his truck locked in more than its locked out for at least 6 months out of the year !!!

Also.. if you do put in some manuals.. I'd pull those vaccum lines off and plug them up... They get cracked and leak water and dirt into your main bearing and wreck them eventually...

They could probably stand to be taken apart, cleaned and lubed. I did that to mine a year or two ago, and they've been working great since then. Here's a link, with pics and details instructions on how to do it: http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/allube.html

Found some bolts to plug off the one end at the hub, and cut off the hose and plugged it with a screw and silicone on the other end.. Some other people might have better idea's.. thats what did for now !!!!!!!!!

If you put manual hubs in, you need to do like Russ said and block the vaccum stuff off. The vaccum barbs in the hubs are threaded in, so you could take them out and put a bolt in place with some sealant on the threads to keep debris out of the hubs.

For the vaccum lines, I'd trace them back to the pump area and cap the barbs off at the source. If you don't have those vaccum lines sealed up, you could run into problems with the climate control system not switching to the vent you select, and it will be stuck on defrost. Eliminating the lines takes away some sources for potential vaccum leaks.

Ok thanks a bunch. Tried to clean them and regrease them but that didn't really help. I like the idea of Warn hubs.

so if you do the manual warn hubs, you dont need the dash switch to get the front to lock up? there is no more auto?
what if you up-grade the vacum lines?
I only ask caues I need 4 wheel drive, but not untill I get to the hills. so I lock my hubs before I leave the house, and when i get to needing them I flip the switch to 4H.

I'm not sure of the exact routing, but the vaccum pump (and I think there's a small resivoir for vaccum) is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment, toward the front. IIRC, the rubber hose that would come off the knuckle goes up to the frame, where the brake line and ABS sensor wire would be run to as well, and the rubber hose connects to a harder line of some sort, where it's run to the pump.

If you go to warns, you are correct that you don't use the dash switch to lock the hubs. They are either locked or unlocked, however you set them before you get in the truck. The auto locking feature of the hubs (which I personally really like) is gone. The dash switch's only purpose is then to switch the transfer case into 4x4 mode.

I'm not understanding the part about upgrading the vaccum lines? Are you talkiing about the stainless braided ones that Dieselsite sells? If so, I think they'd work fine, but if the autolocking hub is dirty and needs to be cleaned & lubed, upgraded vaccum lines won't help that.

Thanks jtharvey, that what I was thinking.

I also like the dash switch adn have yet to have problems with the 4wheel drive. (knock on wood) and yes the those are the ones I had in mind and understand that dont help the hubs them selves, but should prevent leaks between the hubs and pump.
Never mind, I have had a friday brain fart. I do have to lock my hubs, and still use the switch on the dash for the tranfer case.
guess I could up-grade to warn hubs and nothing will change, but upgraded hubs of course.

The vacuum lines runs from the hubs, to a sort of electric switch by the vacuum tank Then to the vacuum tank. What I did was, removed everything, the electric switch, the lines, but left the tank and pump in. Where I took out the vacuum line out at the tank, I then plugged it so that it didnt leak. Mine works great, and if you upgrade to the manual hub locks, it would the the best way to insure you never have a leak again.
