i have a 78 bronco with a 351m. i rebult it about a month ago. after the engine warms up enough to open the thurmostat the water pump starts rattaling at idle. i have changed the water pump and it still rattels. i think the water is boiling in the engine around the cylinders because i had them bored. i have tried everything and talked to alot of people about it and they are clueless. if anyone as any idias i would like to hear them
Do you have a good temp gauge. It would have to be very hot or low on water to start getting steam pockets. Are you certain it's the water pump making noise? The head gaskets could be on wrong blocking a passage but I've never heard of this symtom. Can you describe the sound in more detail? Could it be the belts? I almost tore the front of an engine down once after using PEP boys belt dressing. It sounded like a knock! A little water on the belts while it's running, if the sound goes away you found something.
