Rear diff. howl
Hi everyone. I did some research on the forums but didn't see exactly what I was looking for. I have a 99 Expy with 3.37 LS gears and I have started to notice the rear end making a howling noise. (Sounds like i have deep tread tires).Does it at all speeds and is more noticable when coasting down. Had the pinion seal replaced 2500m ago and was told everything was fine. Looked at my bill and noticed that they topped the fluid up with 80w90 and I know it should be 75w140. Am I in for trouble? Could it be a universal going ? Thanks for any replies!

These diffs have a spotty history on all bearings. Can you tell if it's wheel speed or driveshaft speed?
Either way, it has to come apart and the bearing replaced. Once a bearing is making noise like that there is no saving it.
Ditto a gear set should you be so unlucky.

Decided to take the expy. back to the shop that changed the seal. They agreed that there is something wrong inside the diff. housing as they could hear the noise right away. Went through all the simple checks and everything outside the diff. was within specs. They want to have a look inside on Tuesday so I will keep you posted what happens. Cheers!
