if by stock, you mean everything is totally stock, including cam and pistons, then stick with the stock valve sizes, which i assume willb e 2.08/1.74 for most factory heads.
but you can do a little clean up work on the ports, especially the exhaust port to free up some extra hp while you have them apart. the biggest thing is to blend all the transitions nice and smooth and grind down the bump in the exhaust port. also a good 3 angle valve job will go a long way also.
actually for the most part stock is 2.08/1.66 (or 1.67 depending on who you talk to) on a stock rebuild yeah stock size usually works just fine although if your thinking of having hardened seats put in for some reason or you need replace some valves I say up the exhaust to 1.71. Not a big deal and probably won't make a SOP diff but does help some.
My motor has an Edelbrock 600 on it now and an aftermarket cam of unknown size. It also has been rerung. I would like to put an intake and headers on it. Since I put the motor together, I've been thinking about doing head work to it. Would 2.19 and 1.71 valve help ?
