Quick question, without having to do any grinding or shaving (except for maybe rod clearance) will a 460 crank drop into a 390 block or is a 428 the max? Thanks
the 460 and the 390 are two totally different engine families, so no the cranks won't interchange without probably major, major machine work.
the 390 is part of the FE engine family (352,360, 390, 406, 427 and 428 are some of the members of this family) and the 460 is part of the 385 engine family (370,429 and 460).
as far as putting a 428 crank into a 390, yes that is the largest factory FE engine crank that can be put into the 390, but the 428 is externally balanced and the 390 is internally balanced so you will need the flywheel and balancer from the 428 to make it work. i think you end up with a 410 motor by doing this.
their are probably aftermarket cranks that you can get to increase this cid and maintain the internal balance of the 390 also, but not 100% sure of this.
