This week I removed the timing gears on my 79 351M. I was suprised to see that the large gear body was metal, but the teeth were a funny phenolic or nylon material.
Anyone seen this before? Why would ford do that? Did it save them money?
BTW, my chain had 0.8" of slack, will the motor run any different/better/worse with the new chain set? Any other adjustments I should make (like timing the dist.?) with the new chain set?
Just a suggestion, but, you may want to bite the bullet and get an aftermarket roller timing set that will allow you to advance the cam ( 3 keyways on the crank sprocket ). These seem to run around $40.00. A friend of mine with a 351c Mustang says that the pre '73 timing sets are not retarded, so one of these may have the same effect.
