Identifying A cleveland...

I think I may have found a Cleveland, The reason i think so is because the intake looks a little narrower than the M or 400... Anyways, the Motor was on the ground so i couldn't see the block casting number. The latest date I could find was D4 (74). The number on the Intake ar as follows

D3AE-8A26-6A

That is the only number I could find. It still has points, and it has the "Powered By Ford" valve covers. I thought these were only on the cleveland. I thought the other 335's just had the "Ford" covers???

Anyway, i will look some more tomorrow, and by the way, what is the spacing between the top two tranny bolt holes for a smallblock?? i may be able to tell this way

Thanks Alot

Identifying A cleveland...

Clevelands use the same motor mounts as the Windsor, 302 and the 289. meaning only 2 bolts attatch it to the block

Identifying A cleveland...

It is a cleveland!!! A 2bbl to be exact. I looked at the motor mounts, and yes they only have 2 bolts. The heads each have a "2" cast in the upper left hand corner, and the bellhousing is a smallblock.

I appears that is a frankenstine tho. The oroginal owner bought it as a 351M, and he was surprised to see how much power it had. I have yet to look at the block, but the intake it a '73 2bbl, and the exhaust manifolds are '77's, and the carb is a '74. So, i'm interested to see what is inside.

Another neat trick to tell a cleveland almost instantly, is by the valve covers. If they Say "Powered By Ford" then it is almost definately one.

Thanks

Skud,

Congratulations on your find.

I wouldn't put much stock in valve covers, though. You can change valve covers on a junkyard engine in 10 minutes, and that's why valve cover ID tags are not reliable to distinguish a 351M from a 400.

I have seen early (pre-'75) 400s with the "Power by Ford" valve covers also. I believe all standard 335 series engines (351C and 400) used the "Power by Ford" valve covers until 1974 or 1975.

Good luck with the 351C and let us know what you find inside.
