My 94 F-350 seems to be running rich mainly noticeable at an idle with transmission engaged in a gear(automatic), strong smell of gas out of the tailpipe, rough erratic idle, put it in neutral or park and of course r.p.ms come up and it seems to smooth out seems to be running fine going down the road maybe a little worse performance than usual. 1994 F350, 4x4, efi 460, 69,000 miles. The check engine light isn't coming on, and maybe disconnected. Anyone have any ideas on what commonly causes this?
Thank You!
O.K, I hate to sound dumb, but I don't have a code reader or scanner, I wouldn't be against buying one but I am not really sure what I am looking for there seems to be quite a few out there. I work as a millwright and I am very famimliar with roubleshooting things, and have done alot of mechanic work on and off the job, I just don't know a whole lot about common issues with fuel injection
I'd pull the codes and see what it reads. That may point you right to the problem. A thrown code does not always trigger the CEL. If you get no codes, then I'd start with the vacuum lines and make sure you don't have any leaks - particularly the MAP vacuum. Then move on to the EGR Valve, EVP Sensor, ECT sensor, FPR, IAT Sensor and the IAC Valve in that order.
Whats happening is the O2 sensor is reporting a lean condition so the computer is richening it up. Hmmm O2 sensor should be on the list above too.
This isn't a given. A rich burn is not always the result of a lean reading by the O2 sensor. Yes, if the O2 reads a lean system, it will trigger the computer to dump more fuel. But more often than not, it's usually something else that's causing the lean reading at the O2. Plus a lean reading is not the only cause for a rich burn. A failed FPR will allow too much fuel pressure to the rail. A bad ECT or IAT sensor can cause the computer to still think the engine is cool resulting in a richer burn.
Again, pull the codes. It should give you a good starting point.
In town I have a knechts, schucks, napa, carquest, and that's about it!
As these are all franchised private-owners, I can't point you to one. My local Carquest will read the codes...so would the one in my hometown but he charged you $25 for it. I'd just call em up and ask. Start with whatever one is closer.
And if no luck...bchances link does provide advice on how to do a self-test. I just find it can be difficult for some to accurately get info out of a self test. The counting drives me nuts.
ahhh.. I asked because we have a local place here in NM called Knechts..didn't know there was a chain..I was gonna say, if your local here, just bring it to the house saturday...
Beautiful state! Got family around Medford..Love it up there. We go up to Hells Gate almost every year..
