just wantin' to know how far advanced some of you are runnin your cam timing and with what compression ratio, any knocks or pings? i have a timimg chain i can go up to 8 degrees +-, i was thinkink 2-4+ what do yaw think?
I will be running BP ultimate (best i can get around here)
and this is on a complete rebuild
94 5.0-306, forged flat tops est. 9.4 CR
What cam are you using? Cam timing is not the same as ignition timing, advancing it won't make a motor more or less sensitive to pinging, but it will move the powerband down slightly. The difference this make is subtle, it won't have a hugh effect on a street driven vehicle, you are better off selecting the right cam for the powerband you want and installing it straight up.
A few years ago I rebuilt a 351M and advanced the cam 4 degrees from stock. It was a pretty aggressive grind and I did it to allow more low end for towing. It did make a difference. I imagine that it could work in the 5.7L well too. Just my thoughts.
i forgot to mention that the cam i have is the crane truckpower 364215, 2020 grind, i had read somewhere that advancing the cam made higher cylinder pressures and i figured that would make it ping, the cam is ground to make power right off idle so i probly just need to put it in straight up, i'm mainly out for low end grunt which is why i was thinking about advancing the cam and i have also heard that it can help on the mileage a little but you cant always believe everything on the net, and yeah no bowties around here lol

Most of what you heard is correct, advancing the cam will move the powerband down which boosts low rpm TQ which should help milage. As stated it's not a hugh change, but a change nonetheless. If you have an adjustable timing set there's nothing wrong with trying it out to see if you like it. BTW.. is this an EFI motor or are you putting a carb on it? If EFI you need mass air for this cam.
It is a SD EFI truck but I have heard a bunch of people recommend it even for speed density. Another guy on here says he is running one with SD and that it idles smooth, and it doesnt mess with the computer, i wont know until i get it in but i was planning on mass air or either mega-squirt in the future anyway, may have to go a little sooner.
