Pulleys touch?

On my 79 400, the pulley on the water pump, and the one on the crank actually touch each other!! They've worn down so much that it doesn't make noise anymore, but I'm wondering how this is possible, and how I can fix it??

Pulleys touch?

fordmanSLO,

There should be about 0.5" clearance between the crankshaft pulley and the water pump pulley. It's close, but they should not touch.

The only reasons I can think of that your pulleys would contact is either extremely worn bearings (crank front main or water pump), or you have the wrong size pulley (probably on the water pump).

If you pull the water pump pulley off and check on the backside around the mounting flange, you should find a part number punched into the surface. Post that number and I'll check to see if it matches the number(s) used for your engine.
