yank the mechanical, cover the gaping hole with a plate, and install an electric pump in front of the tank switch solenoid (put a filter before the pump, too). I have heard that replacing the mechanical pump with an electric one makes for a better running truck, and I plan on doing it myself when the truck runs again.
replaced one on my '89 7.3 a month or so ago...bought two of them...never could get either one to work properly...simple job...be sure the lever is below the cam in low position??...Anyway..took mine to a good mechanic..seems that the cam lobe must have been worn enough to put an electrical pump on instead...wish I would have done that in the first place!!
This guys covered the hole...he works at the local auto machine shop in his regular job...put the pump on a bracket he made almost in the same location as the old mechanical pump...He said it would be alright there, when I asked him about putting it on the frame rail..as I 've heard some say on this site!!...He had already bought the pump..assuming it is from Carquest Parts...He put a fuse link on the inner fender well...Works fine...so far!!
What electric pump would you recommend? and where do you have yours at?
From other posts on this list I'm under the impression that Holly running under 9 PSI is the prefered choice. I have one sitting on the shelf that I am going to install in the next few weeks if I can get past other problems.
Also, the Holly works best as a "Pusher" which is why most people install it close to the tank selector on the frame rail, and do put a filter ahead of it.

I figure I might have to change it someday...He already had it mounted, said he has mounted many but think most of them have been gassers...might as well leave it until I need to change it, I guess....
