That I300 is going to give you more climbing power than that 351 and it weighs less. I'd leave it. If not, where are you located and what do you want for that motor???
Well,I drove to the guys house the other day to pick up the engine,Friday afternoon,Had cash on me!!He desides not to sell it because he bought another pick up to put it in...So now im back to square one with this 300 six..I have been thinking about rebuilding this engine,But im seeing disappointing hp/tq numbers.Think hp was around 150 and tq around 230.No wonder when i drove it to the guys house the other day i was having trouble getting to 35 miles per hour with a 4 speed and new 4:10 gears front and rear.36 inch boogers are not helping this engine much either.Right now i am looking at watching the mud runs and watching the climbing from the sidelines due to not enough engine for the truck.Had a friend come look at the engine this morning(sunday)and he said that my carb needed a rebuild,So we rebuilt it and now,LOL,Everytime i go to stop in it or stop at a red light,Etc,It dies..Starts right back up.Get to another stop sign,Red light,Dies...Have no idea what is causeing it,Plugs are clean with no carbon or anything because i was thinking burning rich.No idea..Anywayz i have been looking at forums on here on the 300.Guys trying to get more power out of them and what i see is they are spending a ton of money on the engine to get maybe 200 horse. And then i have heard that the engine is good till around 3500 rpm and then it`s flat on it`s face...Sorry for the long post but im at a loss on what to do and how to get this truck to perform the way i need it to......1 barrel carb made by carter.Think it`s a yfa...
If you are really going to mud bog and hill climb this thing, I would go ahead and put a 429 or a 460 in it. The old 429's can be found sitting around in the old Lincolns and Fords of the early 70's, and the 460's also can be found in the mid to late 70's large cars. You will have to round up a bellhousing for it.
Here's a couple junkyards that came up that have 460 engines for sale in Indiana.

Thx a lot for the info franklin2.I don`t know what im gonna do yet to be honest.I had the other engine in my mind and when he told me it wasn`t for sale,It kinda put me in a fog so to speak on my thinking.Im still trying to get the 300 in my truck running to where i can go get an engine somewhere. The wife`s car is down so she has been driving my new truck so im stuck here untill i can figure this carb out!!!!lol
Thats not my truck,Thats just a random pic i found on the web,I did look it up and found out it has a 390 in it.It looks just like my truck though thats why i put it next to my name,Im gonna take a pic of mine today and post..

Anybody have any ideas about this carb?1 barrel yfa.Rebuilt it last week and everytime i stop at a red light the truck dies,Starts right back up.Get to another light,Dies..I know i have goofed somthing in the carb,Just don`t know what!!!It also runs very smooth for about 10 minutes and then you can here the engine idle down or bog down and then i have to keep foot on gas just to keep it idleing setting still!!!!!If i shut the truck off or let it die,It starts right back up running smooth again,Im confused and have no idea what it is!!!!
Look down the throat of the carb while it's idling. You should see no liquid fuel. If you see fuel dripping down into the engine, the gas level is too high in the carb. The float adjustment may be off, a piece of dirt may have gotten underneath the needle, or the float is soaking up gas and sinking.
I can bet ya a doller the float level is wrong in it!!!!I looked down the carb and didn`t see any fuel going in it while it was at idle...The truck starts fine.Go down the street a block and it seems like it drops a cylinder.Starts to chug almost. It dies.Starts right back up,Drive just a little more and there it goes again. The rebuild kit only had a little piece of paper ruler to set the float level and then the model number of my carb was not listed so i just took the most popular adjustment and set it!!!!It seems to me the float hung down more than what it did before.I wish i would have just left it alone now!!!!Oh yea franklin2.I think im gonna run this 300.I feel kinda stupid saying this,But i found out that under the carb there is a vacuum tree!!!And the thing was completly opened.Plugged the thing and it seems like the truck picked up 100 horsepower...LOL...No joke,Not a hunderd horse but it is running much better,Better than it ever has.I can get a wheel in it to,Through three gears,1ST 2ND AND THIRD,Im loving it,Im gonna check this float level in it and i bet its wrong,Do you know what it should be set at?The model number of the carb is as follows.carter yfa model number 76508
