Another dumb question ...

I was looking under the hood of my '86 f250 6.9l and am wondering if the "doohicky" mounted under the alternator and powered by a belt from the pulley on the alternator is a type of vacuum pump and if so, what is it for ?

It is a vacuum pump for your brake booster and your HVAC. Diesels don't intake restrict air like a gas motor does so you can't build a vacuum from the engine when it idles.

So I guess that means I have to keep it ... I wonder if I can put an electric motor on it and move it to the side ... Is it rpm sensative? Or can it run at a constant rpm and still do its job?
