My 87 6.9 which is all stock and has 230,000 mi just started hopping thru the inkake air filter today. I cranked the engine and could feel air blowing from the third cyl on the passenger side. Any one have this happen to them. Thanks
Yep, You have a problem with your valve train. My 7.3 and both of my brothers 6.9 and 7.3's started doing that when you first start them sometimes. They all just started that in the past few months. It depends on where the motors shut down. I think it is the lifters causing it and when they shut down with the bad lifter holding a valve open they relax. They don't do it all the time and it doesn't seem to matter how long they were shut down.
It is weird that they all started doing it around the same time and the milage varies on them all.
Pull your valve cover and go fishing. You will find it.
My 2 cents Your intake valve is not closing or sealing properly. Could be do to a worn spring, damaged keeper, gummed up stem (bad valve seal)/ worn valve stem. Does it go away? Worn (collapsed) lifters usually produce a dead cylinder or valve tap. Either way you need to look at it. If the keeper is damaged you will loose the engine if the valve falls into the cylinder. If the valve is just sticking either to gum or debris on the seat you can pump up the cylinder with air (both valves closed) remove the seal, keeper and spring, and spin the valve stem with a drill to clean both the stem and the seat of gum or deposits. Hope this helps.
I had this happen to me. Long story about a friend that can fix anything....Cut short. He told me to change the oil and over dose the engine with 4-6 quarts of riselone (spelled wrong) it is in a yellow quart bottle in the oil section. I did this and with in 30 or so miles my lifter came free. I changed the oil after 500 miles and used 4 quarts of the riselone again, then after 500 more miles I just went back to my normal oil changes. Thats been a year... Not a problem since.
