Timing Marks 1987 ranger

My son's 87 broke the timing belt last fall. Then him and a friend put it back together in the dark and it would not start. Then they parked it for the winter and he wants dad to get it going. My question is where are all the timing marks I had it firing on 1 or 2 cyls then we started missing with the pulleys moving them aroundetc. 4cyl 2.0 5speed efi

Timing mark on the camshaft is a triangle at the base of one of the sprocket teeth. This mark aligns with the center of three on the back timing cover at about the 5 o'clock position.

Tha auxiary shaft has no timing mark. You turn turn the shaft until the distributor rotor points at the number 1 spark plug.

The crankshaft is timed with the slot for the Woodruff key pointing straight up. There is a circle on one of the teeth of the sprocket. This circle will line up with the edge of a slot in the crankshaft seal cover at about the 1 o'clock position.

Install the belt, turn the engine by hand a couple of revolutions clockwise when standing in front of the engine, the re-check the belt timing. Chances are it will be off a tooth or two. Re-time the belt.

DO NOT turn the engine opposite of normal rotation. You will jump teeth in doing so. jd
