hey everyone its mike again. im still having trouble with my speedometer. i pulled everything out right down to the speddometer and now it wont come out! i cant see how you un-hook it front in behind. if anyone has some kind of help for me, let me know!
is it not working? what year model? i know mine is run off of the abs sensor on the rear axle, and also it wont work if the fuse is blown, just two quick blind answers.
its a 1989 ford f150 4x4. the speedo works. but the interior lights for my gauges and such dont. so i am trying to take out all the gauges to get to the back of that white panel and see whats up. but in order to do that, i need to unhook the speedo.
Just by chance did you check for the instrument panel fuse? If not might want to check for it before you make to much work. If so I want to say there is a plastic clip on the top and bottom, dont quote me but i do believe there is.
Getting the speedocable off can be chalenging the first time. One way to get a little slack is to get uder the truck and pull and push all the slack in the cable thru the floor, and then from inside the truck, push the slack up towards the dash. We are talking about maybe 2 inches. Just enough to allow you to get one hand behind the cluster and release the speedometer cable.
Been quite sometime since I did mine, and I can't rememeber exactly what the fitting is like. It is sort of like a quick connect for an air line. I think you just squeeze it slightly and the cluster pops loose. East way to do this is go to a u-pull with the tools you used to get yours apart. Cut the cable under the dash and pop the cluster all the way out. Once you can see the connection, the method to release it is very obvious.
Good luck Frank
I'll try to explain
slip your hand behind the cluster and feel the cable to the speedo
there is a plastic sleeve around the cable
start at the cluster with your fingers and move away from the cluster
when you get to the end of the sleeve and just before moving on to the cable
there will be a small tab on the sleeve
press this tab towards the cable and tug the cable away
from the cluster
it may take a wiggling and tugging but this is the way
when you get frustrated sit back and relax for 5 or 10 min.
then try again
one thing to check first is the headlite switch
the rheostat on the switch to dim the lites are known to cause problems
do any other lites in the dash work, radio, a/c controls
if not then the switch is the first place to look
well, i took the switch out because my uncle told me what you just did, and i switched it with another truck. but it still doesnt work. its just the speedo, gas, oil, motor, and the other gauges, and the heater and such. im not sure what to think. because the light bulbs for the gauges are in a circuit on that white panel, so im thinking maybe thats why it wont work? im not sure. but i will try what you 2 just told me! thanks alot guys!
