Thermostat question

Looks like I've got that overcooling problem mentioned in another thread but my question is about the replacement thermostat itself. 2001 Ranger 2.3 ltr manual std cab. I'm getting conflicting info on if the replacment part is just the stat or the stat & housing assy. The assy from Ford comes in at about $150 so just doing the thermostat would be the perferred option of course. One parts house come up with just the thermostat for $5-$10. Another has an assy for about $50 and a third has an assy for $120. Anybody actually done one of these and can give a bit of insight? BTW, the symptoms are a P0125 code, little to no heat and the dash gage doesn't move off the peg.
Thanks!!!

Broke down and got the thermostat assy from Ford and it solved the problem. The thermostat is built into the outlet and it would appear that to replace the thermostat this assy must be used. Total cost to replace a thermostat .....$190.72 - includes the $17 gasket and tax....

Ouch. At least it's fixed though, and with a good quality part. A properly-functioning t-stat is important to performance and gas mileage.

You mean that you couldn't just replace the thermostat? That seems weird to me. But then, nothing about vehicles makes any sense sometimes when it comes to replacement parts. A grease monkey got carried away in shooting grease into my steering linkage and blew out the rubber seal. I have to replace the whole link to get a new seal installed. Duct tape is the preferred solution to that one.
