A coworker of mine has an '05 F150 XLT with the 5.4L and around 82,000 miles. Now, I've been with him on rides and it was agonizingly slow. Other than racking up the miles, he's been pretty soft on the truck. To the best of my knowledge he doesn't tow anything more than a 4 wheeler/trailer combo. It's really a daily driver and that's about it.
But he came in today telling the story of how he was getting onto the freeway when he heard a loud bang followed by more noise and now power. Pulled over to the side of the road for inspection and noticed formerly internal parts sticking out of the block.
He's out of warranty (as I understand it, 36,000 miles covers the engine) but is this the end of the road for him? I looked at the list of TSBs and didn't see anything like this problem. Do you think Ford will work with him at all on splittling the cost or anything? What are the other options besides repair or replace?

Guess that would depend on why it blew... But then again, why should they? They warrantied it, disclosed the warranty period, put everything in writing, had service available in the event something went wrong during the covered period. The period ended and Ford isn't responsible for anything after that.
Sucks that it happened but he shouldn't go to Ford about it.

Uhhhh...leave it on the side of the road and put FREE sign on it ??!??
Blown Ford you dont hear that every day! Im sorry for your friend. I as Im sure many others on here dont quite know how to react to this one. seems to me he should be calling ford about it. I dont know what they might do (they dont help with spark plug issue). They might want the shop to take a look so they can determine what went wrong. of course the shop is gonna check his oil type to determine if was 5w-20 very specific on this one. maybe somebody else can chime in on this?? hope it works his way for him. mabe get a new engine out of it.
There might be more to the story than we know or even the owner knows. When this kind of stuff happens, there is frequently a teenage son or another teenager who has access to the vehicle and stuff happens when daddy isn't around.
I don't think he's expecting Ford to do anything about it as far as chipping in on parts or anything. In fact, he doesn't even know that I started this thread. On one hand it's good to hear that this is a rarity but on the other hand that probably means he'll be paying for this one.
I can't speak for the type of oil he uses.
He bought the truck brand new in the fall of 2005. To the best of my knowledge only he and his wife have driven it. His oldest is 5 so he can't reach the pedals and see over the steering wheel at the same time yet...
He's actually on his way to a local Ford dealership with it right now to get an estimate. It's not gonna be pretty. I'll put my guess in at $2850.

He'll be lucky to get a used engine for that much. The last engine job I had at work (99' f-150 with the older 5.4L) ran somewhere in the $4500+ for a USED engine and labor(though I do work for a dealership and we are higher then small shops labor wise).
I know it's hard to say at this point but I think he's hoping that he can get away with keeping the top end components and *simply* replace the block and any other damaged items. Still, you might be right. $4000 is probably more in line. I wonder if Rousch is running any sales on crate motors right now....
anything over $3k is ridiculous. I've got entire plug 'n play motors for <$1k out of junkyards. granted, these trucks are somewhat newer, but I think $3k is entirely reasonable for a longblock. then about $500 for installation at a shop. ripping a motor and slapping another in there is quick and easy.
Have him check these guys out. I have ordered stuff from them in the past, granted no engine, but they seem to have good pricing. http://www.karkraft.com/short_blocks.htm
Just a quick thought.
I'm embarrassed to come back and tell you guys what actually happened, but it's the least I can do.
He took it to the dealership and found out that the #2 plug/coil popped out of the engine. That explains the loud bang followed by noisy clanking. So they need to helix the #2 hole (get your minds out of the gutter), put in a new plug and coil and he's back on the road. $750 still a lot of cash but a fraction of what he was expecting yesterday.
is the tip of the spark plug considered "internal"?
I don't know, I'm just typing what I heard him say. It was 3 in the morning and he was standing on the side of the freeway no longer going fishing for the day. So maybe his mind wasn't quite right.
