Those who have a Lincoln Navigator, tell me about it. Love it, hate it? I'm looking at a low miles 2001 for the wife. Realize it will drink the gas but we like to feel safe. We are also looking at Expeditions.
I picked up an '02 Navi with 67k miles on it a few months ago. Haven't driven it much yet, but I liked the low back front seats (compared to my son's '00 Expy XLT) and the fact that it had a 2nd row bench seat.
It has a number of electrical doo-dads that are gonna need diagnosed once the weather gets warmer (and I've got the air pump out of it write now to fix the pump mounts).I'll say that Inteck engine's got the power (I got the Navi to replace my faithful old '79 which pulls my boat) but it can really drink the fuel if you don't pay attention to how far your pressing the go pedal down!
That 32 valve 5.4 V8 has lots of power and torque. Lots of gee whiz items. Love the heated/cooled seats, the power folding mirrors, the auto running boards. Unfortunately the 32valve V8 uses premium unleaded
What are the effects of using 87 or 89 octane? Pinging under heavy load? We very seldom tow anything.
There are knock sensors to protect the engine from damage due to a chance encounter with low-quality fuel or emergency fillup with low octane fuel, and they will "band-aid" using a lower grade for for awhile. It is not good on the engine's internals to run it on 87 or 89 with the OEM programming setup for 91-you're going to experience some spark knock that's either not audible or barely audible, and if that happens long enogh, you'll damage the valves, the rod bearings, and ultimitely the pistons. Now,with that said-it is possible to run 87 octane fuel in the Navigator-I'm doing it right now in my '01-BUT,I'm running a custom tune that I have changed the spark tables on to reflect the lower octane fuel. I've lost 5-10 hp(whoopee) by doing so,but it's really not noticeable in something that weighs almost 6000lbs.

So is this custom tune something you bought? Like an eprom or a flash utility program you run on a laptop and connect it to the vehicle through the USB or serial port? I also wonder if simply using octane booster might work?

Yes,I have SCT's Advantage software, and use it to make custom tunes for all of my vehicles.
Octane booster is a joke-that "up to 10 points" is kind of a half-truth. It raises it by 10 points, but it rasies octane from 87 to 87.10.

Is your software tool something you do on the side as a hobby? Or are you a mechanic and use it daily? If I do purchase a Navigator, making it run on regular is someting I definately would want to look into doing.
