351c Timing

I bought a 351c from marshall motors out of nebraska but could not find a engine code number. I needed the engine code number to find out what year the motor was so I would know what to set the timing at. From the book I have a 1970 351c should be 6 btdc and a 1974 should be 14 btdc. The guy at marshall told me it should be 6 but the motor runs like crap. When I called him back and told him the way it ran he said it should be 6 and that my dampner might have slipped. I've got it set at 14 btdc and it smoothed right out but I want to be sure. Any ideas??????

If the motor is completely stock, then I guess you need to know. If you have changed anything or taken any smog off, then it won't matter and you can time it by ear like you are doing, just so long as it doesn't ping during a hard pull.

As long as it runs good and doesn't ping you should be fine. My mechanic set mine at 17 dbtc. It was fine until summer came and things got hot, then I had to set it back to 10.
