Haven't been on here for a while (Oct)
I have a 2008 F250 V10 4X4 LB Crewcab with 2500 miles on it. (bought last August)
Dealer said it was ok to wait until 3K to change oil.
I have always changed the oil on a new vehicle at 500 miles but decided to go by their recommendation this time. When I change it I will go with Mobile 1 Synth. as I run this in all my other vehicles and my boat and it is (IMHO) the best.
I can't seem to get a general agreement on what the breakin period for this truck is ... some say 500 miles (like I always thought) others say it is longer and I have heard (I think somewhere on this forum a while back) that the computer "doesn't release it to get it's optimum milage until after 7500 miles" !!!
Does anybody know what the official breakin period is?
I can't find it in the owners manual.
BTW I now am getting about 9 city and 14 highway on the mileage ... about what I expected ... but I didn't buy this truck for the mileage.
Thanks for any input.

Hey buddy, thanks for the most dramatic World Series dinger in history!!!
While I have only read this recently, I alway subscribed to running a motor hard for short spurts, never keeping a steady RPM and changing oil early.
I wonder what this guy thinks of cars like the Corvette, that come from the factory with synthetic oil in them. I like how he thinks that synthetic oil is super slippery....please.

In the two stroke world it takes longer to properly seat rings with synthetic oil. Many people run a crappy lawn boy oil and some even make special oil for engine break-in. Don't know if its done anymore but the outboard motor company had a wearable part on the oil injection system on their 2-stroke outboards. The part slowly wore as the engine broke in and lean out the amount of oil injected into the engine.
I bought my truck with 78 miles on it. Boy I just hope someone beat the hell out of it in those crucial few 20 miles.
After you have 40k-50k miles on a SD it seems to losen up good. It takes time for the suspension to wear in too.

Yea, the synthetic debate is about as hot as diesel vs gas, Ford vs Chevy, Tundra vs the world...
I stopped using synthetic years ago......never looked back.
And all I'm saying is, down the machine-code level, are you SURE there's no code there for this?
There's nothing in it like that.
Ford wants to sell these trucks. If they sent them to the dealerships with a *******ized tune in them that made them run like a PIG,they'd never have sold any. Modulars always loosen up after some mileage and run better-I'm not gonna argue with that. But,there is absolutely no code in the PCM that commands a power reduction until a certain mileage or engine run hour is met.
Some of these reports of "more power after 7500 miles" are most likely guys that bought trucks in the summer, and then noticed that extra pep when wintertime came around. Gas blends also have alot to do the "power" that an engine feels like it has.

Well...at least you will admit to the modular loosening up...and running better. Heck...even if it is not PCM related, the fact is (which you agreed)...the V10 after xyz mileage will run better.
If no PCM code is involved (???), then I retract my previous statement.
I have an idea of testing:
Purchase a '08 SD V10 3v and do a complete dyno run...record the results. Then at 5000 miles do another dyno run...record the results. Now a 3rd run at 7500 miles...record the results. A final run at 10,000 miles...and record the results. Oil change at 5000 miles with Motorcraft 5w20 oil and stock FL820s filter. Also…a new air filter for each run…to keep things even.
Compare results...and see if the hp/torque increases with mileage.
Anyone willing to go out and purchase a '08 SD V10 3v for testing???

The only problem with that is like already stated:
Different fuel blends
Temps
Humidity
Dyno variance
Dynos are great for tuning sessions and back to back runs after parts changes.....

And almost any rig will loosen up and put more power to the ground with some miles on it. It's not just the engine but the whole drive train that breaks in. Tranny, transfer case, rear end, wheel bearings all free up with some miles.
Well, I don't know if this will help. I just had a Ford remanufactured 6.8l installed in my 2003 truck. body had 110,021 miles on it when the motor was set in. I've already put 1,000 miles on it. I'll let everyone know if I feel a difference. Since the rest of the truck is already "broke in" and I dont think they even touched the PCM it should give engine alone results???
Either way I'll post about what "I think" seat of the pants type feelings.
I would just like to add a little to this. I have an 08 xlt crew cab with a 3v-v10 and I think there is something to the motor that doesent let it get full power until 7,000 mile .Why ? Just go drive a new one and go drive one that has 7grand or more on the odo. Mine you couldnt even push it in tell you got so many miles on it. It just wouldnt go, Had no power ,I was bumed until it started to loosen up , And after it did loosen up once in a while it seemed like it would go back to break in mode. If thats what is called. Thanks Todd.
