Do all FE blocks have treathed holes for their power steering brackets? If an engine doesn't have power steering, will it have the holes to suipport the bracket or indicate where to drill them?
You didn't say what year engine you were talking about, but if my memory is correct, the power steering pump on the 390 in my 64 Galaxie bolts up to the water pump only. Its got a big bracket, but I do not recall any bolts to the engine block or heads. Now, the generator and alternators have a bolt the goes into the block ....
I think there is one in the head also Bill. Every head I've seen has the hole on the end tapped. I'm not sure about every water pump having the boss tapped, I think some brackets also use the water pump bolts. That is where you get into the year-specific and application specific brackets that bolt to the block.
So Tyl, I think the answer lies in the brackets you need.

You may be right. It has been a few years since I replaced the power steering pump in the Galaxie. I think we need more info regarding the original posters specific application.
I does make sense that the ps bracket holes go into the water pump. One threaded hole is in the head. I don't have a specific engine right now. Am looking to purchase a 390 engine, and two leads do not have ps, thus wondering would I be able to bolt one right on. I bought the ps system via ebay; http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...215517135&rd=1 Seller says he took it off his '68 F100, and inquired bout the pump. I bought two of him.
"With the pump added the shipping in the new priority box will be $35 and add another $10 for the good pump. It does need the reservoir O ring replaced." I paid $57.50 in all which is quite the deal.
I think the pump and braketery is the same for fe blocks through out the years?
One 390 manual engine I am looking at right now is complete with no ps for $150 2hr drive away. That seller says it came off a '70s truck.
OK. I just went out and checked my set up. There is NO bolt or bracket that attaches the power steering pump to the head or block of my 390. The pump is mounted low on the driver's side, in front of the fuel pump and oil filter. The pump mounts to a really heavy bracket (about twice as thick as the alternator brackets, I'd say) that bolts directly to the water pump. Because of the pump location relative to what is behind it, there is no way for any kind of attachment to the head or block on that side.
Again, this is for a 390 installed in a 1964 Galaxie. I cannot speak for any other application.

My 1968 F250 390 mounted the PS pump on the high on the left side and used a hole in the head also.
VERY different configuration than a 60's car. In fact, those two holes are used to mount either the coil on a standard FE. or the fuel filter on a hi-po FE.
Thanks for the pictures. Seems to be the same setup as the set I bought.
I remember that my current 330 HD had an un-used threaded hole in the driver's side head. I lways assumed it might be for the ps bracket. I never note if the water pump had any threaded holes. The truck's in storage for the winter.
Oddly enough, the mechanic that did the safety check on the truck when I bought the truck, used that threated hole in the head to fasten the coil. Previously, it was just dangling by the wires. That mechanic was totally amazed by some near-fatal unsecured parts he found of the previous U-Haul truck. Things that the truck is equipped with a lever-type parking brake which is like a drum brake around the transmission. The pads were used and eaten up, instead of being replaced, there were some wooden blocks...
No need to worry, I'm taking good care of the truck. Its in the right hands now, and soon will have ps.
