Couldn't find what I needed searching for this info.
I have a 74 4x4Crewcab that I put a 1ton steering box on. Can any one tell me what is the simplest way to do a cross over steering system on this setup?? Should I use an 86 or later f350 arms or have some made?
or use the 3inch spacer on the opposite knuckle and have a drag link made?
oh, forgot to mention that I have a dana 60 open knuckle front end.. my tie rod is new but does not have the hole in it for a drag link ect.. I would replace the tie rod with whatever setup would work best for a crossover system.
I was considering just getting a new tie rod and then a long drag link, but it does not look like it would clear the spring.. The drag link on the newer, 95 and forward trucks, looks like it would work because it has a bend in it..
Ya I went with the four bolt box and a 3 inch drop pittman. It looks like it would work well.
I will have to measure for the drag link.. it would be a WAG since I don't have the knuckle yet, but if I get within an inch or so that should work.. It looks like they want 169 for the knuckle and 85 for the drag link..
I ordered the complete kit from them. They first sent me the steering arm, drop pitman, and rod ends.Onlything left out was draglink bar. Then I bolted everything in place so I could make the measurement of the draglink they made. Its the only way to go for steering way better push pull design. The steering arm can be used for high steer as well(relocating tie rod above leaf spring for clearance over rocks ect..) Yeah I made the trac bar its to help prevent bumpsteer and side to side movement.
I keep looking at all these threads because I want to do the same thing. However, I notice you have a lot more lift than I do. There just doesn't seem to be enough room for the pitman arm to go straight back and clear the frame rail and the leaf spring. I'm tempted to just put a box on the outside of the frame rail..
I will lose about 2inchs of travel if I do the crossover, 4 1/2 inch bumpstop required? With that said if I went with the standard drag link, then when the springs flexed the bumpsteer and poor steering control associated with the springs flexing would be enough for me to say ok, I'll lose the 2inches and go with the crossover.. ..
I ordered my kit and will go ahead and install the NWFW arm and drag link.. cost is about 300 bucks but it will be worth it!!
When you consider $200 for and drop draglink, $100 drop pitman and the wear and tear on it and poor steering control of the conventional steering??
The $300 is not a bad option.. By the way the guys at NWFW are great.. I highly recommend this setup for anyone considering a crossover steering setup.. They customize the package to your needs. Not too bad..
My thanks have to go out to 73 Ford guy for paving the way..
No problem bud...hey just one thing though did they have the stuff in stock?? I thought I would have everything in a week or two from order and it took a couple months by the time it arrived. North West Fab is only about an hour and a half drive from my house!! They were slow but they have some cool stuff no one else carries. My next upgrade is going to the high steer and upgrading stub axles to dana 70 35 spline that they carry.
well, Matt said that the arm and ends would ship out the next day? He said it would be here by Friday? Well, it din't make it. I will give you an update when it gets here...?????
How much spring travel do you have? It looks like you might not have that much by looking at the your pics?
I will lose some, but over all I should get about five inches with a four inch lift.
