Just heard from my fleet sales manager that anything built after 01/08 has to have a idle timer that will shut engine off after 5 minutes. Of course, this is in California. Maybe it could be tweaked to less then 5 minutes and used as a cool down timer? Or will it be a complete P.I.T.A. for those that need/ want to idle for more then 5 minutes? I'm sure if running in PTO mode the timer would be bypassed. I know, I know, should have posted in the '08 section but thought we'd get a kick out of it in here.
Complete PITA for those who want/need more than 5 minutes. But the CA greenies are insistent that trucks are the root of all evil, and want them out of the state.
Despite the fact that trucking carries 90% of the CA economy.... (*snort*)

I wonder what's going to happen in traffic jams? It's funny how they can't get the freeway systems right or the traffic signals sync'd. Next they'll probably put parking meters in our trucks for us to pay for that idling tax.
Traffic jams will simply mean whacking that starter button... which means a lot of replaced starters 2 years down the road, from the over-use. CA doesn't care.
Their mandate is similar to the EPA's: Clean air at *ANY* cost. Both EPA and CARB are mandated specifically NOT to take cost into account when considering air quality standards.
This only applies to diesel powered vehicles that have a GVW of 14K or more and is not just a California thing. It is also required in Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maine, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. In other states the truck can be ordered with or with out the Engine Idle Shutdown.
The only possible loop hole I see for states that require it is order code 63E.
ENGINE IDLE SHUTDOWN .................................................. 63E
Buses, recreational vehicles, and emergency vehicles
are exempt from the Idle Engine Shutdown requirement
nationwide. Other state-specific exemptions may apply.
Selecting this code confirms that the customer intends
the final configuration to be exempt.
I forgot to mention the 14k gvwr thing. Just bought 2 '08 f450 w/6.4, pre 01/08 build so I don't have to worry. I just think it's funny how we get robbed of performance by all the emission requirements that result in a lower m.p.g. which results in more fuel being burned to get the same distance, are the requirements really working?
In the long run, no, I don't think so. The conspiracy theorist in me has some ideas as to why, but nothing I can substantiate.
I think most of this stuff is gonna backfire, probably around 2011 or so. But I can't really tell you WHY, except that the industry simply can't afford it much longer than that.
It will only shut down when the truck is in park. (or neutral w/parking brake set)
