So i have had my '02 7.3 PSD excursion for about 6 months and about 5000 miles. How often do i need to change my fuel filter?? Miles? Months?
Im learning TONS from all that contribute here, i tried a quick search, but nothing came up to the exact question i have.
Thinking of going Bio D when it warms up so i will probably get a few filters to have on hand.
Generally 10-15K is when most folks change fuel filters. You might check FleetFilter.com for filters...good prices. I'd drop the tank and clean it out before switching over to biodiesel. While you have the tank down do the Hutch Mod and harpoon the tank.
Harpoon is cutting off the fuel fill and tank vent tubes as close to the inside top of tank as possible. The diesel foams as you fill and causes the pump to repeatedly shut off and makes getting the tank as fuel as possible a pain in the azz. Diesel fuel used to gush out if I wasn't paying attention. After Harpoon no problem.
Hutch is also called the "in-tank mod". It prevents air from entering the fuel system from the fuel tank or from the quick connects on the fuel lines.
I change mine every 15000 miles. Be sure to drain your fuel/water separator peroidically........I do mine once a month. Get a 2 ft piece of 5/16 dia. hose
and old antifreeze jug. The drain tube is on the passenger side on the front of the engine. Its easy to find when you are under the truck.
For when you change the filter: Crack the fuel drain valve to reliver the pressure in the bowl, otherwise the cap will be very tight. Use a pair of channel locks opened up wide to span the webbing on the cap. Be sure to lube the o-ring with diesel when reinstalling. Don't over tighten the cap or you run the risk of binding the o-ring and you will end up with a 50 psi leaker. You'd be surprised how far a bound o-ring can squirt. I know I was.
All of the above is good info. I use my oil filter wrench (the kind that bends 90 degrees) to get the cap off. Guzzle has a fuel filter change write up now if your interested. http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/ffilter.html
