First of all, I have searched the archives for related threads and still have to ask this question. Unless I just missed the answer, please bear with me.
I have an '88 w/AOD and 1356 Electric w/manual Warn hubs.
I used 4L to pull a horse trailer out of the mud and when done, switched everything back to 2H. All lights went out and I went on my way...barely!
I was turning almost 3k RPM @ 30 MPH. Would you say it was still in 4L?
If it is, why am I able to turn the front driveshaft by hand?
I removed the T/C motor and the indicator was pointing at 2H. I cycled the motor (with it detached) and it does operate. I was able to turn the indicator so I wouldn't think it's frozen up.
Any ideas?
BTW, this is my first post but I have used the advice in this forum for my '70 EB, '88 FSB and '04 F-150. You guys are great and knowledgable and appreciate any help you can provide. (did I suck-up enough?)

i dont know that much about the 1356 but most t-cases have two linkage parts. one for hi-low and the other for 2wd-4wd. some people even set them up on different shift levers so you can be in low but still in 2wd. and that sounds like what yours has done. it sounds like yours did disengage the front axle but never shifted out of low. did you have it in P or N when you shifted out of 4L?
I have actually tried it both in P and N with no effect. I am familiar with the twin stick on a Dana 20, and understand what you're saying. Inside the 1356, there are two shift forks and it's possible one of them may have broken or is bound not allowing something to mesh properly.
I just want to have as many ideas as possible before tearing into the T-case or Tranny.
You should hear the transmission shifting even with the Xcase in low range. IF
you don't hear it going through the gears then something's amiss in the tranny.
I now know that it's definately the T-Case. On a hunch, I drained the fluid and can see "chunks" in the bottom of the case, too big to come through the drain hole. It looks like the end of one of the forks.
Now I have to decide to just replace it or repair it. I can replace it for just under $700 w/1 yr warranty.
What would you do? Can you even buy individual hard parts like the forks?
