Hi,
The check engine light came on in my 2001 Ranger, 3.0 with automatic transmission.
I drove to a parts store and they analyzed the problem as the EGR valve, I bought one and had it installed.
About 2 days later the light came on again. I drove back to the same parts store and another technician hooked up the code reader and told me it was the EGR valve. I explained that it had been replaced. She then let me look at the code reader and it read "EGR Low Flow" or something like that.
I was told to unhook the battery cable for 5 minutes to reset the check engine light. This only lasted a day or two.
My gas milege is about 21 mpg.
I would like to have it repaired to make the light turn off. What could it be causing the low flow?
Check the port that the EGR mates to, see that it's not plugged with carbon. Also check the DPFE/EGR valve pressure feedback sensor and hoses. Commonly throws CELs. Make sure the vac line going to the nipple on the EGR is not cracked/broken/disconnected. Apply vacuum to the nipple (suck on it or attach a clean vac line) and make sure the plunger rises and then falls when you release the vacuum.
OBD II vehicles store fault codes. Disconnecting the battery won't clear them, unlike OBD I.
