Powerstroke Maintainence Intervals

Hi,
We are looking into purchasing a Super Duty. It would be used as a daily driver, but also to tow horse trailers (mostly 2 horse bumper pulls, but possibly larger) and other miscellanious hauling. I have a preferance for a diesel with a manual transmission, however I have never owned a Powerstroke diesel. I know that with diesels there are some maintainence differences from gasoline, scuh as fairly fequent injector replacement, but I am not familiar with Powerstroke specific maintainence. What are the regular Maintence intervals for a Powerstroke Diesel, when do they occur and if it is something that I cannot do on my own (I am mechanically inclined, but I have heard that the electronic direct injection in the Powerstrokes makes them difficult for the home mechanic) what are the costs like? I would probably be looking for a used, low milage truck.
Thanks,
Jack

Frequent injector replacement? Ahh pish posh! I have 175,000 on my truck and still running the stock injectors. You probably heard that because guys like to mod these trucks to the max for more power, and that's where stock parts start to fail.

As far as maintenance goes, you're going to see your oil changes get more expensive, expect a change at 5,000 miles for regular dino 15w-40. Also you'll be needing to change your fuel filter every 10,000 miles. Coolant flush every 20-30,000 miles on standard coolant. You can switch over to ELC coolant for a change every 300,000 miles or until the wheels fall off. Tranny flushes and filter changes at that 30,000 mileage interval.

Parts that fail often: batteries. glow plug relay. CPS. ball joints (usually on higher mileage vehicles) power steering pumps and other accessories that wear out after time (just like they would on any other vehicle). The only other weak point I can think of is the transmission, especially since you'll be hauling. Keep up with tranny maintenance and it most likely won't be an issue.

Oh also I needed to add..if you're mechanically inclined, you can do EVERYTHING on this truck, except maybe rebuild the tranny. These guys on the forum will show you how.

It's amazing how rediculously simple these motors are, ESPECIALLY with a resource like FTE.

She is right. I have 117,000 miles on mine and only changed the CPS. Do the maint. and you should be good. Look for a good 7.3, and don't look back.

After you buy the truck, we will help you spend more money on mods.
