Unhappy Turbo problems

I have just started having problems with what seems to be my wastegate opening and closing when my motor has not quite warmed up. When just starting out in the morning and only when its not pulling hard. I think it's the wastegate because when it happens my boost gauge drops to zero, I hear a hissing sound, all most like the bypass valve opening, then when the sound goes away my boost comes back up. Could it be the bypass or wastegate? My mpg has also dropped off. It doesn't seem to be a problem once its up to temp. It's a 02 with @ 185K

isnt that the ebpv (exhaust back pressure valve) opening and closing ... i thought its suppose to do that in colder conditions to get the vechile up to running tempertaures. If it is that then im sure u can disconnect that if u would like.

I thought that too but I thought that it's supposed to not function once you were in motion.

Well to be honest ive never had that problem since i live in Florida, but ive read in numerous pages that it can last a good while until the pcm tells it the vechile is up to proper temps. Alot of members say there trucks sound like a jet when it is activated might be something u might want to check out.

Yes, mine does that too until you step on the brake, then it kicks out. I've never had it kick on while I'm driving, and I've been in colder places then central Texas. Could it be a sensor problem?

It (EBV) can come on under certain low load driving conditions and when there is a malfunction in the system. Do not rule it out. I am leaning in this direction as the WG could pretty much care less about temps if it is malfunctioning.

Will the EBV cause your boost to drop?

Absolutely. It closes off a valve in the exhaust and creates more backpressure thus defeating your boost.

Of course it will. It closes a butterfly valve in the turbine housing preventing exhaust flow. This keeps the turbo from spinning/spooling.

Edit: what Mike N said.

Chase, I don't think you can unplug it without throwing a code. I do know that some of the sponsors have a fooler plug that plugs into the harnes and makes the computer think that it is still hooked up. About $35 IIRC. Maybe somebody else knows how to fix a lot cheaper, I don't, but then I don't know much.

From what I understand, NO. I don't think it will be a hard code that lights the SES light though. I have also heard that the EBV sensor is used for fuel strategy. I think the best thing is to disconnect the actuator solenoid and make sure the valve is open. No, the best thing is a non EBV pedestal.

Just make sure you know what you are doing as the EBV solenoid diverts oil to the turbo bearings when in operation.

you can unplug the EBPV by un pluging it just under the turbo..above the blue dot in this pic below..there is a wire locking clip on the plug..flip it back and pull on the plug..you will not get a SES light...but you will get a code stored in the PCM...there is a eliminator for this plug if you want it...

my EBPV is a exhaust brake only...i never use it for warm ups any more...
Mike..the EBPS is used for fueling with the PCM..the EBPV is the end of a loop..i took this from Guzzle's page..i have Jody's tunes..so i make sure my tube is clean....

Yeah I was thinking about turning mine into an exhaust brake also! Sounds like a heck of an idea to me. I recall reading a thread on a DIY exhaust brake and you use a toggle switch and it would work when you hit the brakes or you could have it on all the time for warm ups or in the third position it would work normally.

Thanks for all the info guys, just got off work. I guess my only question at this point, is it normal operation for this valve to operate when the vehicle is in motion? I've never heard it do this til now and I've been in a lot colder climate.
