Hi all; putting an Offy intake and Hedman headers on my straight 6 - what options do I have for bolting them down? Is reusing the original bolts and washers a bad idea? Thanks
You can re-use the bolts but many people go with a larger washer for more clamping. Another good idea is to double up the gasket and use a high temp silicone ( I think it is copper?) to hold the gaskets together. I had a post a while back called 2wd or 4wd header and another member told me what they did. If you do a search you may be able to find out more.
I used APR manafold stud/nut set for a 302. I found washers at a "Fastner" company. They were as thick as OEM and the same diameter and hardened. I used the fel pro gasket and no sealant. No problems!
I used break cleaner and sprayed the bolt holes and used a 9mm brass bore brush and cleaned them. I ran an tap in each hole and cleaned them to remove all dirt. Used air to dry them and a small flash light to look at them.
As for the studs, I hand screwed them in place and installed the manafolds.
The nuts and washers torqued 5# over OEM and after the 500 mile check on torque I have 10K with out a problem there!
I have the same setup as you, I used all original bolts, the gasket that came w/ the headers and it was fine and I guess still is. The only problem I have is the #3 cylinder exhaust tube cracked away from the flange a little bit and now I have a leak, of course it's a place I can't get to w/ a welder without pulling off the intake. Thats the only problem I've had though, other then the headers get rusty quick, if you haven't put them on yet I'd try some high temp paint.
I retro-fitted my 82 with the Offy intake and EFI manafolds. I used a walker down pipe to the exhaust. I had the problem of the exhaust system was too stiff and cracked the down pipe at the "Y". I welded the crack back and added a "L" brace in that area. To correct the problem I installed a "flex coupler" in the down pipe below the starter!
The flex pipe is not a piece of the corragated tube. It is a stainless steeel unit that replaced a section of pipe.
The pipe split when I had the truck in a bind/swist on a hill.
Idk why mine cracked, I really woudn't think it had much to do with twisting it since it is only on one cyl. and way up top, plus the motor mounts are custom done with chains so they can't come loose.
I don't know that is had/has that much to do with the mounts. My mounts are new and it still ripped.
It had more to do with body/frame twist for me.
As for the location on your headers, it could be a bad weld or weak point where it broke.
Don't know but just and idea and what my problem was. Basicly FYI stuff.
Just got my Offy intake and my hedders in today. I measured everything out and there doesn't seem to be any clearance issues that I can tell right off the bat. It looks like the passenger side motor mount might have to come out while I install the hedders, but I'll try and find a way around that first. Just have to get some bolts now. These things are huge!
What year is your truck? On mine (86) I had to grind off the air pump bracket to get the headers on, I didn't have a air pump on there anyways, but the alt bolts to the bottom of it so it has to stay on. I also had to take my starter loose, but don't take it out, just loose, once those headers are on I don't think you can get the starter in or out.
