first thing i have to is WOW! That must be the stickyist glue in the world. i used channel locks to peel the foil off then removed most of the leftover fuzz off. i found the quickest way was to heat the glue up ( i used a propaine torch, like used for soldering) then scrape the heavy stuff off with a plastic scraper ( the plastic thing used to apply bondo ). once most of the heavy stuff was off the elbow grease comes into play. rags and acatone. and rubaway. i didnt notice a difference outside but while under a load in the cab uas a noticeable difference. i like it i think the wife will find it anoying so i wont tell her, ill wait and see if she picks up on it. ww install is next on the list as soon as te weather breaks
the wicked wheel whistle is an aftermarket turbo wheel that elminates surge on 99-03 7.3's. you can make an easy check by pulling the intake tube and counting the number of fins on the turbo wheel.... 9=stock 10=wicked wheel
This truck is all stock as far as I know. The noise sounds like a far away siren, maybe a bearing noise, but it is pulsating all the time. I hear it at like 50-65mph. It's an annoying sound.
Probably looks a whole lot better under the hood with out it as well !!!! What purpose does it serve anyways ??? Is it just there to look like sh*^ and quiet down the turbo noise ????
Yeah, supposed Ford decided to put that on there after they received complaints from people about turbo noise. At the same time they also went to what is the stock wheel for the turbo. The wheel before was similar to a Wicked Wheel in design.

Is it like what you hear on the interstate when a big rig spools or accelerates? If so, that is what a turbodiesel does. If it is something different, or new, it will bear some investigation. You could pull the intake off and check the blades and the bearing by hand.
EDIT: I just saw you have another 7.3. If you have a different sound going on, you need to look at the turbo. The intake, WW, and exhaust can make for different sounds too.

I tried that on our X. Drove my wife nuts! She has very sensitive ears and unlike me the turbo whistle isnt music to her ears. She doesnt mind some sounds, but the constant whistle was not impressive to her. Lucky for me I hadnt pulled the foil off my pickup yet so I just swapped tubes and traveling in the X is a happy experience again!
