My son's .... 1986 F250 351 4X4 Auto, 156K miles ... Rust Bucket/Project Truck
My son gets a front end shimmy only upon reaching 70 mph or so on the highway. The truck's suspension appears to be all stock, with very new Perilli A/T tires that seem to be of OE size. The truck tracks straight.
Since the shimmy is only at such a high speed, any particular item/problem I should be looking for? Or just get underneath there and start muscling all the suspension components looking for looseness?
I would have the tires balanced on a Road Force machine. I had a set of 22" Pirelli's on my Hemi Dodge that no matter what we tried they would still vibrate at around the same speed.
After spending about $1200 on them, I ended up taking them off and installed Toyo's.
The results were like night and day. I have Pirelli Diablo's on my CBR1000RR and I love them.
It's your son's truck, and you want him going over 70? I'm 16 and see no reason to go that fast and above 60 their is an obvious drop in gas mileage on these old trucks.
Check everything for looseness (tie rods, ball joints, wheel bearings, bushings, etc.) and grease all suspension/driveline components including wheel bearings. Even if the u-joints feel tight it may be worth replacing them. Cheap to rule out ($20-$30) and if they haven't been done recently it could be considered preventative mainenance. Never hurts to check alignment either, or pinion angle for that matter.
My truck, well my truck just doesn't go fast anymore. When I got it in stock form I could easily cruise over 85 MPH. Now with the lift and 38.5" tires... Well 55 is plenty for me, any faster and it's into the power valve most of the time so just sucking up gas for little gain. It's nice to go fast in a truck, but I use my truck as a truck, so I have a car and a bike for when I wanna go fast. But regardless of whether you *need* to go 70 MPH or faster I would want to fix the problem regardless, as it may manifest itself in other ways or slower speeds later on. Remember, no matter what the liberals try to brainwash you with, speed DOES NOT kill.
4 miles per gallon is inconceivable to me. That's not a air fuel mist going down the venturi....more akin to a waterfall (or fuelfall). That's one whole quart of $3+ fuel every mile. Park it!
