Ask him how much BP a 5" straight pipe would make . Ask him what codes I should see, a " thats a big a$$ exhaust" code or "making to much noise" code

He is using the theory of backpressure for a GAS engine. Never ever heard of any codes from straight exhaust. I've had both on my truck, and no codes, I too get that "whoosh" of cold air from the passenger rear window now that I have 4" and straight piped

The guy doesn't know what he is talking about, back pressure is really only needed for the engine, and the back pressure in a PSD is created by the turbo. Cut out the muffler it will run great, plus faster spool up, so more peformance not less, and I don't know why it would throw a code, besides EBPV creates the back pressure to warm up the engine faster, it should matter what is behind it.

Thats not the waste gate closing it's the EBPV closing to help it warm up.

If you get the 6637, don't show that guy. He will tell you to take it off because you are not getting enough IBV ( INTAKE BACK VACUUM) so your turbo wheel don't fly off.

If you have a turbo on the engine, it will supply the back pressure.

Yeah, I have been getting up to 900 degrees on it in 80E empty and I have seen 1200+ loaded with the horse trailer passing someone in 60 tow. I do have the 6637.

He used to be the head diesel mechanic at a very reputable Ford dealer outside of Baltimore, but he has to be crazy on this one.

I'm going to take it somewhere else.

I've ran a 4" with a muffler, 5" no muffler, and now 4" duals with no muffler.

Never any codes.......just gets loud with out a muffler, but I like it. The 4" duals is the loudest setup I've run.

I would have to agree with Cookie, your friend is thinking of a Gasser and not a TURBO charged diesel.

On a gas motor this would be true, as anyone that has had the bright idea to remove the muffler or run open headers will tell ya.
Ya I opened the headers and I have no low end now... It's weird... And I don't know what happened???

I have never owned a non-turbo diesel motor vehicle, so I do not know the effects that it would have to open the exhaust on one.

Doing mine next week...

Doc.

I had an old chevy 350 and had exh. cutouts for racing and had no problems with running open headers (other than the noise and heating up my legs when I got out).

I did have a high duration cam so I didnt have low end anyways, but thats why I ran tall gears.

It was an old 78 1/2 ton pickup that ran mid 11's. I blew the doors off plenty of "hot rod" cars with it, including a built 69 coupe Mustang and a 95 IROC Z28. Both of them by at least a truck length. Maybe I was missing power from only running headers into a 4" 90* piece of pipe about 10 " long, but I didnt notice.

As far as a diesel goes, open up the exhaust. The faster you can get the exhaust out, the better it will run.
