I have been shopping around for a conversion kit for my distributor to do away with the points. Does anyone have a recommendation ? I am leaning towards the Pertronix Ingnitor II and a Flame-Thrower coil. Looks fairly easy to install. Input would be appreciated! Thanks!
I put the petronix II on my stock 352 and kept the stock coil. It was simple by the instructions. Plus it helped MPG. (Please don't ask me technical questions I'm still learning)
The Pertronix I is simply a drop in affair and easy switch to do. The Pertronix II is different in it's control module and that it should run off a straight 12 volts. That means one needs to bypass Ford's resistor wire at the ignition terminal and take that wire to the flamethrower coil that goes with the Pertronix II. You can leave the old resistor wire in place as it won't interfere with anything as the electricity will take the easiest route to the coil. Pertronix talks about this but it can be hard to decipher and always brings up questions on any car forum.
Went w/ Duraspark II on both 65's, one w/ 390, and the other 302. Used the point dist. to swap for electronic dist. Purchased the ignitor box and coil from local Napa auto parts store. Went with the larger dist. cap not sure if cross over was an issue. Which ever route decide to go with, IMHO one of the better upgrades you can make on your truck, those hard to start mornings become far and few.
I currently just switched to the Pertronix Ignitor system and Flamethrower II coil, oil based for my 66 F100 with stock 352 runs flawless. I also changed the distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and plug wires. I found that Mac's Antique Auto had the best price for the Ignitor system and National Parts Depot for the Flamethrower II. It was a very simple process just make sure you use the spacer correctly to set the gap or the system is not going to work correctly! Good Luck! Frank
The Pertronix and Duraspark are both excellent upgrade choices, and done by many here. The Petronix is more plug and play, while the Duraspark requires a dist. swap if memory serves.
I went with the Mallory Unilite conversion kit that I purchased through Jegs. I think it was around $100.00 dollars but I am not sure now. For stock engines it is a very simple install, mine took a little time and thinking as I was running a MSD 6AL box with my points so the hook ups for the wiring was not the same. I have been running that for 3 years now with now complaints.
Do tell please. I currently have a 292 and need this information thanks for your help.
Well what do you want to know? I'm no expert, but I've done a ****load of reading about this stuff and am currently running a Pertronix I with no problems.
I would say to stick with Pertronix; they seem to have their act together. I know guys who've played with the Mallory Unilites and those are pretty good two. But Pertronix is, like some guys have already said here, for the most part plug and play.
The Pertronix I has generally been more reliable, from what I've read, and the Pertronix II is either go or no go. People either have problems or none at all. Make sure you keep your receipt, and they'll replace it.
Even though I upgraded to a Pertronix setup, I still keep the set of points in my glove compartment. Never know when it may die, and its a relatively easy matter to replace the points back into the dizzy on the side of the road.
Pertronix is probably the easiest and most common way to go.
This is just a quickie overview of my analysis. My Pertronix is great! Feels smoother and slightly better MPG (could just be my imagination though ). The main reason why I upgraded was so that I wouldn't have to mess with points.

as soon as i get around to it ill be swapping in a duraspark dist into a 302 that is in my 66 f250.
either dist cap will fit, the 2 peice cap is better and eliminates cross firing.......even a dodge cap and rotor will fit, just the rotor sits 180 off.
heres a suggestion that I a lil not as common as the petronix conversion. accel makes a electropnic conversion kit. and the few guys that i have talked to that use them, say nothing but good about the kit. and in my opinion its a lil more accurate just because of the way it triggers. it uses a optical trigger which in my thinking, cant go wrong with light or no light. thats my two sense.
