I've put the Pertronix in a few older cars. It works great. I put one on my '65 when I first got it. You'll get more power and/or better gas mileage depending on how far you push the pedal down. Duraspark works ok too (I'm running it on my '70), but I prefer the Pertronix. It's easier to install and there are fewer wires for a cleaner looking engine compartment.

I'm running a GM HEI style distributor in my truck to replace the old Dur-a-spark II which replaced a Crane XR-700 system that replaced the old point system. So far the only issues I have noticed between all the different systems is external boxes for the Dur-a-spark and XR-700. The each one performed just as well as the other but ultimately I like the GM HEI. I literally has 2 wires running to it; one for the coil power and the other is a tach signal. The XR-700 used a slotted disc under the rotor and IR light to fire the plugs. Dur-a-spark uses a magnet system like the Pertronics, so it should be just as reliable if you set the base plate correctly.

I've run them for years and years (well over 10) and never had a failure. Did you ever figure out why yours failed? Was it a manufacturing problem or a wiring problem?

Early units, and a combination of critters chewing on the wiring allowing an errant ground.

I run a pertronics now with a flame thrower in my crew and have no issues with this one.. but no mice hanging in the heat here so far.

Just finished installing the Pertronix Ignitor , Flamethower coil, and Pertronix wires. What a difference! The engine even "sounds" different. I romped on it it at about 30mph and the rear end sqwatted down and I could really feel a HP difference. Acceleration is smoother and, it starts as soon as the key is bumped. It was a very easy installation that took only a few minutes. I highly recommend this upgrade for any FE that is still running points.

Did you just purchase the Pertronix Ignitor I? Or did you also consider the Pertronix II but disregard it for some reason?

Another thing I noticed aftre the upgrade is that my engine doesnt sound as strained at highway speeds like it did before. It is quieter at cruising speed. I found that interesting. I am anxious to check my fuel mileage ; )

From: Clarksville,Tn
Cliff; what was the total cost with a package deal? And I assume instructions came with it?
