you can mark the output yoke/shaft (or driveshaft) at the 6 o'clock position, then rotate the engine (or input shaft if tranny removed) 1 complete revolution with tranny in gear, have someone watch output.
if output/driveshaft turns more that 1 full turn, and the engine only turns 1 revolution, it has an overdrive (if they both turn exactly the same, it's 1:1).......hope that makes sense...
On t'other side of the overdrive unit is a governor. Activated by the accelerator pedal...there will be an overdrive kickdown switch and somewhere under the hood (usually mounted on the firewall) is the overdrive relay.
In the picture below is a tramission that I have taken
out of a 1959 F100. The truck had a push,pull cable
mounted under the dash with over drive on the handle.
There was no solinoid mounted on it, can you possibley
tell by the picture if it is one?
Would you think that I should install in my 1957 or not?
Thanks everyone
Bob
Thanks for your picture. That clears up everything for me.
The OD unit wasent there when I pulled it. Someone else
had already removed it. Thanks again for your picture.
I cant belive of all the information you can get here
What a great place
Take care
Bob
The OD bolts onto the back of the trans section you removed, see below
I believe you'll discover someone removed the entire unit (transmission & overdrive), and replaced it with a 3 speed manual transmission.
That's what ppl do.
Trying to find the correct length output shaft and corresponding looong tailshaft to replace the O/D unit is almost impossible.

If you look at the back of the case and see a shaft that comes out of the case when in reverse, someone just swiped the OD. If not, it never had one.
I sold the trans shown in the picture in good working order for $150. Still needed the electrics gone thru, but you may be able to find one for similar price. Or go with a T-5, not too many reasons not to, actually.
