OBD 1 or OBD 2?

OBD 1 or OBD 2?
I have a 1997 F-250 HD 4X4 and a 460 motor. The truck has both ports for an OBD-1 and an OBD2 scanner. Yet neither communication port seems to work with either reader. I'ven been wanting to do a computer upgrade but it's kinda hard not knowing which system to buy for. I called a guy at Ford who explained that this was impossible to me. So I pose the question to you all, is there anywhere I can look to find out what my truck is configured for? I've read that anything after 96 must be OBD-2, but I also read that trucks over a certain weight are exempt to this... So I'm back at square one, can anyone elaborate on this please?

My 04' SD uses OBD-2 but complies with OBD-1. I had to read codes on my sisters 95' Explorer which is OBD-1 but also has an OBD-2 port (Under drivers side dash). The OBD-2 port can be a PITA sometimes so the reader had to be hooked up to the port under the hood.
