97 f250 HD codes...obd1

so i have a 97 f250 heavy duty, CEL comes on after a few minutes of driving....every time...it doesnt come on when you start up...just when your start driving...i have the obd1 port...got figure...i can use a paper clip and make the CEL flash to me....

now im not sure if the truck is obd2 with obd1 port or just obd1 all together...

ill have to recheck the flashes...but im pretty sure i got a bunch of 11's and then at the end was 2 72's.....now i did that with key on engine off....should i try it with engine running as well?

Yep your truck is OBD-1, only trucks under 8500lb GVWR went OBD2 in 1996. Ford carrired over the old body style and powertrain until the new SD truck was introduced in 1998. I also think your truck should produce 3 digit codes not 2 digit.

Ford Fuel Injection has a good listing of all these codes.

Conaski is right OBD 1....also yes you should be three digit.... From what you describe your getting KOEO code 111 which is all systems pass... then CM code 172 (HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean) anyway if this is the case you should flash 1 1 1 twice then 1 to seperate KOEO and CM then you will get 1 7 2 (4secs) then 1 7 2 again....

Well if your truck is like mine (96 w/460) you may have only one O2 sensor and then it will apply to that one.. I've had that code twice already....Once it was the result of a blown header gasket and the other time was a bad sensor... With the bad sensor it ran badly like a bad fuel pump was on its way out.. the engine would surge.. Neither time did my CEL come on while driving though...

It wouldn't hurt to do a KOER test while your at it and see if that comes up with anything.....

Good luck, AL

alright i went back through the tests again...it is 3 digit...

key on engine off is 111 111 1 172 172

key on engine running is 1111 1 172 538 536 632

was i suppsoed to be reving the truck or hitting the break or hitting the OD switch, because thats what the last 3 are.

In KOER when you get 1111 you are suppose to step on the brake, quickly half turn the wheel, then OD on/off 2x's.....then it will do checks and I think give you the 1 that signals you to step the accelarator......

haha i gotcha....ill hafta do it again...3rd times the charm i suppose....but assuming the other 3 codes were because i didnt do anything im thinking its prob just the 172....which is to lean on right side....which i think there is a leak at the manifold...does the manifold have to be replaced or can i slide a gasket in there, even though they dont come with new gaskets?

A manifold leak is usually a crack and that you'll discover when you take all the bolt out if it, but if it's not cracked a gasket can sometimes fix the problem.

Im having problems with my F250HD also, but a 1997. Wondering the truth behind "Some 1994-95 cars have the 16 pin OBD2 connector (shown below), Corvette's, Camaro's, and LT1 cars among them. Even though it is an OBD2 connector, it has an OBD1 system behind it on these 94-95 cars." you mentioned this one is OBD1, should mine be too? I know the pin/conector is OBD2. Is my OBD2 reader possibly wrong with a OBD1 system behind it?

Yours will be OBD-I unless you have a PSD. They have been OBD-II since they came out mid-year 1994.

I see you are in California from your profile info. If your truck is equipped with California emissions it very well may be OBD-II. What engine do you have? If it is a 7.5L then you definitely have OBD-II.
