In fact I have blocked all text messages from my phones and the kids..
I think it takes longer to read a message with all the short cut notation than to just say the words..

I guess the rationale is that you can look at it later, even if you can't answer the phone right now. One of my sons told me that it is good, if you don't want to get into a long conservation with someone, only want to get the message to them. But as to why we need it, I think it is just another gimmick that we are being sold by the phone company, just another, "gotta have"!
