Can someone tell me the differences in aluminized exhaust systems. I am looking for 5" turbo back system for 1999.5 7.3L. Does anyone have any experience with Shop Diesel? They have a 5" system (their brand) with muffler replacement pipe for $315 shipped to your door. A MBRP aluminized system on Ebay is going for about $450 + shipping. Why the big price difference? What gauge metal is the minimum you would want? Neither lists what guage they are using.
Thank you for replying. That is what I thought but I thought I should ask. I checked with Shop Diesel and their exhaust is 16 guage and comes with all hardware. I am going to order and plan on painting it prior to installation with stove black.
There is aluminized tubing in different gauges as well as stainless tubing. Usually 16ga and 18ga. tubing is the norm. When I order an type of mandrel bends I go for the thickest I can get, usually 16ga.
MBRP has good systems. I havn't heard bad things about MBRP, the diesel guys seem to like them a lot.
It also comes in 14 guage, we've been trying to go with the 14 guage as much as possible because the 16 guage only lasts 3 to 4 years. We've had some complaints about our 16 guage mandrel systems only lasting 3 to 4 years, we don't make the tubing so the only thing to do is go with the 14 guage, if you want it to last longer you should try to find thicker guage tubing. Also on newer vehicles, the catalytic converters are putting out a lot more water then they used to, so you have that going against you, too. The only thing that really lasts is stainless steel
If anyone is interested, ordered exhaust system on Thursday and was delivered to door on Friday for $315 by UPS no extra charge. System looks great but no brackets are welded to pipe. System comes with 4" down pipe, 4" to 5" pipe, muffler replacement pipe, over the axle pipe is in two parts and one more short pipe. All clamps and brackets are included but you have to weld to pipe. You use original turbo to exhaust clamp. 16G pipe seems very high quality. I will install and MIG weld together. I would recommend this system if you can weld. Maybe higher priced systems come in fewer parts ( less welding).
